Optical transport networks serve as crucial high-speed low-latency backbones for modern communication applications. Currently, managing these networks involves a mix of isolated element management systems and custom-built integrated management systems such as Operations Support Systems (OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS). While this approach is effective for system management, it often requires significant time and effort from skilled operation personnel to achieve the desired results. This paper addresses this challenge by examining the role of Generative AI in transport networks and its potential to expedite the telecom industry's progress toward Autonomous Networks (AN) maturity. It presents structured use cases across various phases of the network life cycle, including planning, configuration, operations, maintenance, and assurance. Additionally, it outlines the technical and architectural enablers necessary to reach AN Level 5 (AN5), where networks operate fully autonomously and are self-optimized with minimal human intervention.
